During the plenary meeting of the Congress of Phthisiologists in St. Petersburg, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Phthisiopulmonology of the Russian Ministry of Health, the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Murashko, addressed this topic.
“Today we see a decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis, a decrease in mortality, but nevertheless we cannot talk about elimination today. WHO excluded Russia from the list of countries with a high burden of tuberculosis. We see a decrease in incidence over the last five years of more than 42% and a decrease in the number of newly identified cases of the disease by more than 34%. The dynamics of a decrease in patients with multidrug resistance has also been noted, but nevertheless, in no case should we reduce our attention to this disease,” said Mikhail Murashko.
According to the minister, the emergence of new antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs is a new stage in the development of the service, which made it possible to more effectively fight tuberculosis, understand its pathogenesis, and the variability of pathogens.
