There is no threat of widespread transmission of the metapneumovirus in Russia, according to Anna Popova, head of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor). She reported an increase in cases of swine flu (H1N1) instead. Popova emphasized that the focus is currently on the H1N1 flu virus, while noting a high vaccination rate among the population, with over 56% of citizens vaccinated during the national campaign.

Popova stated that the testing system for various respiratory viruses, including metapneumovirus, is well-established and provides reliable diagnostics. The metapneumovirus, a long-known pathogen, typically causes standard respiratory symptoms, and its seasonal manifestations, especially in colder months, are common. She highlighted the importance of seeking medical attention promptly when symptoms arise and warned against self-medication.
