According to Mikhail Murashko, the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, the neonatal screening program will include more than 30 diseases this year.

“This year, according to the order issued by the Prime Minister, diagnostic equipment for postnatal screening is purchased. In 2022, the neonatal screening program will include more than 30 diseases,” Murashko quotes TASS.

As the head of the Ministry of Health reminded, Russia’s Circle of Kindness Foundation pays for medicines for patients with orphan diseases and severe pathologies.

“That is, in general, a system of care to mother and child is being built in the country at all stages, including neonatal follow-up,” Mikhail Murashko added.

He also noted that patients are provided with the medicines they need, “which sometimes cost more than tens of million rubles.”

As the press service of N. P. Bochkov Research Centre of Medical Genetics (RCMG) reported earlier, ten cases of SMA in newborns were identified as part of a pilot project of neonatal screening for SMA and primary immunodeficiency (PID).
