The researchers of the All-Russian Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (FSBRI VILAR) have developed and patented a drug based on elecampane inula, motherwort, lingonberry and rosehip, which reduces blood glucose levels. According to TASS, the drug has high biological activity and low toxicity and is suitable for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and its complications.
“The advantage of the developed remedy for patients with type 2 diabetes is the synergy of the beneficial pharmacological properties of all the ingredients. Herbal remedies in general are among the most promising in the treatment of endocrine system diseases. Such medicines are mainly represented by herbal mixtures and drugs based on plant extracts. They exhibit a wide range of biological activity and are safe. They can be used for a long time without creating an addiction or causing adverse reactions,” said Marina Dzhavakhyan, chief researcher of the Experimental Technology Department of VILAR, whose words are quoted in the message.
The new drug, according to scientists, is the answer to the need to expand the range of domestic highly effective and safe medicines for the treatment of type 2 diabetes that both reduce blood glucose levels and prevent the development of vascular complications. The roots and rhizomes of elecampane inula contain a complex of biologically active high-molecular compounds, such as inulin (up to 44%). Inulin improves the lipid profile and significantly reduces the level of blood cholesterol.
