The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation has prepared a draft list of medical organizations that will conduct expanded newborn screening for more than 40 genetic diseases from January 1, 2023. This is reported by TASS with reference to the corresponding draft order of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
Such screening, according to the document, will be carried out by the NMRC for Obstetrics, Gynecologyand Perinatology named after Academician V.I.Kulakov, Children’s Health Research Center, Rostov Medical University, Tomsk National Research Medical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Centre for Family Health and Human Reproduction Problems in Irkutsk, Morozovskaya Children’s City Clinical Hospital of the Moscow Department of Health, Medical Genetics Diagnostic Center in St. Petersburg, Research Institute Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1 named after Professor S. V. Ochapovsky in Krasnodar, the Republican Medical Genetics Center in Ufa, and the clinical and diagnostic center “Maternal and Child Health protection” in Yekaterinburg.
These 10 centers will process blood samples of newborns.
“Every region will be assigned to one of the centers, and tests will be sent there without any parent participation. At the same time, all positive results will undergo additional confirmation at the N. P. Bochkov Research Centre for Medical Genetics in Moscow. Such a two-stage system will ensure the reliability of the screening results and, if a disease is detected, the timely start of treatment,” the press service of the ministry explained.
The expanded newborn screening program in Russia will start on January 1, 2023.
As it became known earlier, Duchenne muscular dystrophy may be included in the expanded newborn screening.
