The Government of Russia has updated the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies, extending it from 2019-2027 to 2030. The federal budget has allocated 8.8 billion rubles to create and expand state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and genomic research centers, aiming to achieve a world-class level of research. The funds will be received and used by the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”.

According to the updated program, by 2030 Russia should create a network of 80 research infrastructure facilities, including genomic research centers (previously 65). As a result of the program extension, the production of genetic technologies has risen from 36 to 50 during this period, leading to the development of 36 drugs by 2030, up from 20 in 2023.

The Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies was approved in April 2019. The total amount of funds required for its implementation was then estimated at 127 billion rubles. The main goal of the program is a comprehensive solution to the problems of accelerated development of genetic technologies, including genetic editing technologies.
