Every year in Russia, about 625 thousand people are diagnosed with cancer. This is approximately 425-427 people per 100 thousand population, said Andrey Kaprin, chief freelance oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, General Director of the National Medical Research Center of Radiology.
“This is a good indicator, because I remember that we once identified 599 thousand, just recently. It turns out [now] 125 thousand more. This suggests that we are detecting cancer more and more often, and therefore in the early stages, because this is a demographic indicator,” he said during a direct line organized at the international exhibition and forum “Russia”.
He also cited WHO data, according to which the total number of cancer sufferers worldwide remains at 18 million people. Every day in all countries of the world 27 thousand people die due to neoplasms. By 2030, the medical community anticipates a rise in morbidity, as highlighted by the expert. However, Kaprin emphasized that instead of instilling fear, this forecast should serve as a motivation for timely disease detection.
Kaprin previously proposed eliminating the mandatory third phase of clinical trials for a drug if it is already registered in a foreign country. The final phase takes three to four years, during which time the drug could be successfully used.
