The first Center for the Development and Recovery of HIV-Infected Children has been opened in Russia at the Clinical Infectious Disease Hospital named after S.P. Botkin in St. Petersburg. Here, infectious disease specialists, neurologists, rehabilitation specialists, and psychologists will work with children.

According to the chief physician of the hospital, the chief freelance pediatric HIV specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Evgeniy Voronin, today 100% of children with HIV infection in Russia receive antiretroviral therapy. However, this does not solve all the problems of such children: for example, about 80% of them have coordination problems caused by damage to the central nervous system.

The center will be able to serve up to 40 children at one time, and you can stay there for up to two weeks. “The first task is that we take the most difficult, heaviest children from all regions of Russia, <…> the second is comprehensive care,” added the head physician of the hospital.
