Currently, in Russia, there are approximately 10 to 12 million individuals suffering from diabetes mellitus, with nearly half of them remaining undiagnosed, according to Ashot Mkrtumyan, the of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at the prestigious Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry. He also mentioned that there are currently approximately 600 million individuals diagnosed with diabetes worldwide. However, it is projected that by 2045, the number of individuals affected by this condition will skyrocket to an astonishing 783 million.
“Today in Russia there are definitely 10 to 12 million patients with diabetes. Half in the register itself. This indicates that one in every two patients is not properly diagnosed,” he stated. According to the Nation study: based on available data, approximately 20% of the adult population in Russia is deemed to be at an elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
“In Russia, 20% of the population aged 20 to 79 years has prediabetes. This is 30 million people. Compared to 15 years ago, the number of people with diabetes has tripled. And it continues to grow. Regardless of forecasts, the reality is much harsher. The incidence is growing, and we assume that it will continue to grow,” Mkrtumyan emphasized.
