Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law allowing seriously ill prisoners to be released immediately following a court decision. Before, a court decision could be appealed within 15 days, and during this time, individuals would still be required to serve their sentences.
The qualifying list of diseases comprises various types of tuberculosis, neurosyphilis, HIV infection, certain forms of malignant tumors, aplastic anemia, severe manifestations of diabetes mellitus, and other pathological conditions.
Furthermore, the director of the institution where an extremely ill inmate is being held has the authority to seek the prisoner’s release on health grounds if they are unable to submit a petition themselves.
