At the latest meeting of the Circle of Kindness Foundation’s expert council, a novel form of medical care for children with peripheral arteriovenous malformation was officially approved. A new technique called combined endovascular embolization involves the use of various occluding agents, such as adhesive compositions, embolization coils, and specialized occluders.

Ph.D. Mikhail Komissarov, Head of the Department of X-ray Surgical Methods of Diagnostics and Treatment, the Krasnogorsk Children’s Clinical Hospital (Leonid Roshal Children’s Clinical Center),” noted that every year in Russia from 20 to 40 children are born with severe forms of this disease who require this treatment. He emphasized that the introduction of this method will allow children to avoid long stays in hospitals and disability, and will also provide an opportunity for full growth and development.

This high-tech and minimally invasive treatment is intended for children with a rare and severe congenital condition in which the arteries are directly connected to the veins, bypassing the capillaries. Combined embolization of vessels affected by peripheral arteriovenous disease is a recognized effective treatment method throughout the world, the organization said.
