During a recent meeting of the Government of the Russian Federation, a pivotal bill was approved that could notably alter the price of sugary beverages. The proposal includes an increase in the excise tax on these products from 7 to 10 rubles per liter. However, the document has yet to be presented to the State Duma.
On July 1, 2023, a the first significant move was made with the introduction of a 7-ruble per litre excise tax on sugary soft drinks. This tax applies to beverages containing added sugars or sweeteners, such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose, provided these drinks contain at least 5 grams of carbohydrates per 100 milliliters.
