Russian President Vladimir Putin has enacted a decree to establish the National Center for Genetic Resources of Microorganisms, which will be based at the National Research Center Kurchatov Institute.
The government is required to allocate funding for the new structure within four months and to formulate and finalize the center’s development program within six months.
The center’s main functions:
Formation and replenishment of the national catalog of especially valuable samples of genetic resources of microorganisms.
Ensuring guaranteed long-term preservation and reproduction of samples included in the national catalog.
Furthermore, employees will actively participate in creating innovative methods for acquiring, storing, thoroughly evaluating, and utilizing the genetic resources of microorganisms.
