Legislators plan to propose amendments to agrochemical and pesticide legislation to the State Duma by year-end, aimed at tightening supervision. Sergei Mitin, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Agrarian Policy and Nature Management, shared this information.
He noted several key problems in the industry. First, this concerns the uncontrolled use of veterinary drugs in agriculture. There’s a significant lack of a unified system for regulating pesticide use and monitoring residues in food production. Additional difficulties are created by the lack of certified methodological developments.
Illustrating the scale of the problem, Mitin cited statistics on honey products: the results of laboratory tests showed that last year all tested brands were counterfeit, and in August 2024, the share of counterfeit products was 81%.
In this regard, improving the legislative framework in the field of technical regulation and standardization is of critical importance. Particular attention should be paid to the development of mandatory and voluntary requirements covering the entire life cycle of food products – from production to disposal.
