More high-tech and promising Russian developments for the treatment of genetic diseases are increasingly becoming available in practical healthcare, Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko announced. His remarks were reported by the ministry’s press service.

«Research in genetics is uncovering new causes of various diseases, and effective treatment technologies are emerging today. It’s encouraging that in recent years, a growing number of innovative, high-tech solutions developed by Russian scientists have entered the market», — Murashko stated at the All-Russian Conference of Experts on Rare Diseases, titled «Russia’s Light of Goodness: The Path to Saving Rare Lives».

Murashko emphasized that scientific advancements are crucial for the continued development of the Russian pharmaceutical industry and for ensuring the sustainability of drug supply in the country.

«We are investing not only in research but also in pilot industrial production. It is extremely important for us to ensure the entire chain — from the idea to production, followed, of course, by implementation into clinical practice», — he said.

The Minister added that the range of domestically made drugs and medical devices is also expanding in the country, making them more and more accessible in practical healthcare.

Murashko also stressed that in order to reduce the mortality and disability of children from orphan diseases, the country is implementing a whole range of measures, including prenatal diagnostics, fetal and neonatal surgery, as well as neonatal and audiological screenings.

He added that the Ministry of Health is conducting an expanded neonatal screening program for more than 40 congenital and hereditary diseases, and that over the past two years specialists have examined more than 2.3 million newborns. More than 1300 children were found to have congenital orphan diseases. They were immediately placed under medical supervision. Children are provided with specialized therapeutic nutrition and medicines.

Earlier, Murashko commented on the blocking of expired or falsified medicines at the pharmacy counter. He believes the innovation will prevent unfair practices on the part of pharmacies and eliminate the risks related to the human factor.
