Sechenov University has won a grant of 300 million rubles to launch a startup studio and support projects developed by students and young innovators, the university told GxP News.
The University became one of the winners of the contest held by the Foundation for Infrastructure and Educational Programs and the Ministry of Education and Science. The winners also included Novgorod State University, St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation, Novosibirsk National Research University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), and St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University.
The Sechenov University startup studio will focus on key areas in biomedicine, such as the development of medical devices and equipment, consumables made of biocompatible polymers, rehabilitation and healthy lifestyle solutions, and the creation of new medicines, the university said.
“The opening of the university’s startup studio will enable us to complete the full cycle of developing new products for practical healthcare,” said Alla Panchenko, Deputy Director of the university’s Center for Industrial Technologies and Entrepreneurship. “This will allow us not only to run acceleration programs and support startups locally, but also to establish genuine venture partnerships, create joint companies, and expand into the medical technology market of our country.”
The program for the creation of university startup studios is implemented as part of the federal project “University Technology Entrepreneurship Platform”. The task of startup studios is the serial launch of businesses based on the latest Russian scientific developments. Since the end of 2022, over 380 technology startups have been developed within 21 university startup studios. In 2025, six more studios will open, and by 2030 their number is planned to reach 50.
Earlier, it was reported that Sechenov University and the EAEU will develop the production of innovative medicines.
