The Central Research Institute of Epidemiology has developed a new quantitative test for the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus infection, also known as Human Herpesvirus 5. This was reported by the press service of Rospotrebnadzor, which oversees the Institute.
Unlike the standard PCR test, which only indicates the presence or absence of infection, the quantitative test helps assess viral load. This allows for predicting potential health consequences for the patient.
“The virus can be present not only in the blood but also in other biological fluids. After detecting the infection, it is crucial to organize long-term monitoring of the patient’s condition. This includes regular tracking of the viral load, which makes it possible to detect complications early and monitor relapses,” the report states. All components of the new test are produced in Russia, which guarantees its accessibity in the country.
Cytomegalovirus is widespread and can pose a danger to immunocompromised individuals, causing serious complications. According to the World Health Organization, up to 90% of the world’s population is infected with herpesviruses.
