President Vladimir Putin visited the Sirius University of Science and Technology, where he toured the country’s largest laboratory complex dedicated to life sciences and related disciplines, according to a statement from the press service of the federal territory of Sirius.
The facility, opened in 2022 with support from the Russian pharmaceutical company R-Pharm, spans more than 9,000 square meters and houses 12 resource centers and 123 laboratory units, with nearly 2,000 pieces of equipment, including more than 200 unique installations. The complex enables Russian scientists to conduct advanced research in chemistry, genetics, immunobiology, molecular and cellular biology, aging mechanisms, search for new therapeutic targets and develop personalized medicines.
Sirius University also runs a program supporting young scientists. Research teams led by senior scientists receive up to 50 million rubles annually for three years, with an option to extend funding for two more years. Teams headed by early-career researchers are granted 30 million rubles per year. Among the projects under development is an innovative tactile feedback technology designed to simulate the sensation of touching virtual objects as if they were real.
Additional research focuses on immuno-oncology, particularly new treatments for malignant brain tumors by enhancing the body’s immune response through the activation of immune cells.
Construction of the second phase of the university complex is nearing completion and is expected to be operational by mid-2026. The expansion will add 100 new laboratories, including a preclinical research center, bringing the total area of the laboratory complex to 18,000 square meters.
