The Federal Center of Neurosurgery in Novosibirsk has hosted Russia’s first specialized training for neurosurgeons in the technique of dorsal root ganglion stimulation. The program brought together nine practicing neurosurgeons, as well as leading specialists in neuromodulation and pain syndrome treatment from federal clinics in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk.

The two-day training included a theoretical module and hands-on practice, patient selection protocols, and analysis of clinical cases. The training was conducted by a specialist from China.

Dorsal root ganglion stimulation is a modern neuromodulation technique that targets not the spinal cord itself, but a specific dorsal root ganglion—a nerve cluster responsible for transmitting pain impulses from a particular area of the body.

The method demonstrates high efficacy in treating chronic neuropathic pain resistant to drug therapy and standard interventional procedures.

Active clinical implementation of the method worldwide began in the early 2010s, and in 2016, this approach received FDA approval.

According to the World Health Organization, chronic pain is one of the leading causes of reduced quality of life and disability worldwide. In Russia, various estimates suggest over 20 million people suffer from chronic pain, while access to modern neuromodulation methods remains limited.

The introduction of dorsal root ganglion stimulation expands therapeutic options for this category of patients. According to expert estimates, by 2030 the Russian neuro- and cognitive technology market will reach approximately 29 billion rubles with an average annual growth rate of 17%, with neurostimulators remaining its key segment.
