The coalition government of Austria, consisting of the Austrian People’s Party and the Greens, agreed to purchase 1 million doses of the Russian anti-COVID19 vaccine Sputnik V, TASS reports. Its use is planned after registration by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

“We agree with the purchase of 1 million doses of the Sputnik vaccine, which is already used in more than 50 countries. We hope for a quick registration of the EMA, because each additional vaccine helps us save lives, provide jobs and return to normal life faster, “said Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

The new Minister of Health of the Republic, Wolfgang Mückstein, after being sworn in on April 19, said in Vienna that he considers the Russian drug “good” and expects to start vaccination after registration with the EU.

As Kurz noted, Austria’s negotiations with Russia on the acquisition of Sputnik V de facto came to an end, the purchase of a Russian drug is considered possible for Austria. Previously, Austria also considered the possibility of national registration of the drug.
