The Scientific Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants decided to re-launch the production of the antiviral drug Flacoside, developed in 1979, Gazeta.ru reports with reference to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

The pharmaceutical substance flacoside is obtained from the leaves of Amur corktree. The drug is intended for the prevention and treatment of a wide range of viral infections, including hepatitis A, B and C,  acute herpes simplex and recurrent herpes of various localization, chickenpox and measles.

The patent for the use of Flacoside, the access to which was restricted, was received in 1979. The drug was produced for some time in the 1990s. Currently, only the active substance, flacoside, is registered in the State Register of Medicines. The next stage is going to be the market launch of the dosage form (tablets).

Employees of the Institute have completed research on improving the technology for obtaining the substance and have produced experimental batches together with AO Vifitech.

The domestic industry imports 75% of the pharmaceutical substances it needs, mainly from China. According to the Pharma 2030 program, the situation has to change in the next 10 years.
