Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed Mikhail Mishustin, Russia’s Prime Minister, and Svetlana Chupsheva, Director General of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives for the Promotion of New Projects (ASI), to create conditions for expanding the production of prosthetic limbs and support enterprises in the sector. Special attention is planned to be paid to the production of parts for prostheses and their electronic components, including micro motors and microchips. The officers in charge must submit a report on the work done by July 1, 2023, the Kremlin website says.

The instruction was given following a meeting of the ASI’s Supervisory Board held on February 9, 2023, during which, among others, the issue of socio-economic development of four new regions of the Russian Federation was discussed. The need to support the prosthesis market in the Russian Federation was stated at the meeting by Andrey Davidyuk, the general director of Motorika, a company operating in the sector.

“In general, since 2016, the volume of production and sales revenue have increased 120 times, to amount to more than 600 million rubles in 2022. <…>  We see the prospects for market development and understand the export potential. <…>  Meanwhile, the number of small prosthetic enterprises in our country is significantly lower than in the leading states that have a comparable population. We ask to instruct the government to develop support measures for small prosthetic devices manufacturers, which are a crucial element of the rehabilitation industry serving people with disabilities,” he said.

Earlier, representatives of the Russian prosthetics market said that an increase in demand for such products is expected soon, as many fighters returning from the special military operation and residents of Russia’s new regions have suffered injuries in the hostilities.
