For the 2024-2025 academic year, the government has allocated 145,600 spots for students, fully funded by the federal budget. This marks a significant increase of 4,000 spots compared to the previous year. Notably, the number of spots dedicated to healthcare training has surged by 90%. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced this during a meeting with the leadership of the Federation Council on June 24th.

“In medical specialties [increase] up to 90%, in pedagogical specialties – up to 30%,” he said, noting that this type of training, which involves targeted recruitment, requires “mandatory internship” and “immediately from three to five years” of subsequent work in the specialty. Mishustin added that “continuous work is underway on how to improve operational efficiency” in resolving staffing shortages in the healthcare industry.

The Ministry of Education and Science has recently announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of medical education in Russia. This includes the introduction of new standards for medical education programs in nonmedical universities. Additionally, there are reports indicating that State Duma deputies are working on a bill that would empower the Ministry of Health to set guidelines and criteria for the training of medical professionals in private medical universities, expanding its regulatory scope beyond its current oversight.
