The Ministry of Health has updated the clinical guidelines for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus in adults, according to data published on the “Clinical Guidelines Rubricator” website.

Clinical guidelines for this disease have existed in Russia since 2022. The Ministry of Health revises them every 3 years, or every 6 months if necessary.

The updated version of the document notes that flash glucose monitoring (FGM) can be used instead of measuring blood sugar levels with a glucometer.

“The increased accuracy of measurements in modern FGM systems allows for a significant reduction in the frequency of traditional self-monitoring of glycemia using a glucometer. FGM can be used instead of a glucometer for making clinical decisions, except in certain cases — hypoglycemia, rapid changes in glycemia, or if symptoms do not correspond to the system’s readings,” the document states.

In the previous version of the clinical guidelines, FGM was recommended as a supplement to traditional self-monitoring, and it was noted that FGM does not completely replace it.

As of March 1, 2026, a federal register of patients with socially significant diseases began operating in Russia. This register includes patients with diabetes mellitus.
