Federal budget funding for five Russian genomic centres totalled 1.5 billion roubles in 2025, with each centre receiving 300 million roubles, Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova announced at a meeting of the presidium of the Council for the Implementation of the Federal Scientific and Technical Programme for the Development of Genetic Technologies, where the results of the programme were discussed.

More than 660 specialists currently work at the new centres, including leading scientists and young researchers who make up a significant portion of the staff, Golikova said. The centres’ primary focus is not only on fundamental science but also on applied solutions in medicine, agriculture, industrial biotechnology and biosecurity.

Key results from 2025, she said, include the development of gene therapy drugs for conditions such as ischemic stroke, spinal muscular atrophy and Parkinson’s disease. Researchers also developed oncology solutions using epigenetic technologies, conducted studies on vaccines against highly dangerous infections and biotoxin protective agents, and advanced diagnostic technologies and pharmacogenetics.

More than 150 organisations took part in the programme’s implementation, with a total budget of around 21 billion roubles, Golikova said. Infrastructure is also being developed in parallel, including bioresource centres and genetic collections. Tens of thousands of samples have already been entered into national catalogues, with ongoing efforts to expand them through field expeditions.

“Our priority is to ensure that these centres not only elevate fundamental science to a new level but also deliver concrete, applied results for medicine, agriculture and industrial microbiology, and contribute to biosecurity and Russia’s technological sovereignty,” Golikova added.

Earlier, Russia’s Finance Ministry reported on federal budget spending for the implementation of national projects in 2026. As of April 1, preliminary data showed spending reached 1.3 trillion roubles, or 19.8% of planned budget allocations. However, spending on the national project “New Technologies for Health Preservation” stood at just 9.8% as of April 1.
