Russian scientists are developing the first vaccines against cat and dog allergies. The vaccine targeting cat allergens is already ready for clinical trials, while the dog allergy vaccine is in active development, Ksenia Ryabova, a researcher at the Laboratory of Immunopathology of Sechenov University’s Institute of Molecular Medicine and a consultant allergist‑immunologist, told RIA Novosti.
The laboratory has also developed a test system called Allergochip RF – Russia’s first profiling kit that can detect sensitivity to more than 120 allergens. With this tool, doctors will be able to produce smaller‑panel chips (with, say, 20 allergens instead of 120), reducing costs and making the product accessible across Russia.
The development is being carried out jointly with the Medical University of Vienna. Both vaccines are specialised allergy vaccines that act selectively, without the side effects typical of traditional extract‑based products. The completion of preclinical studies for the cat vaccine was reported as early as 2022, with scientists planning to begin clinical trials in 2023‑2024. The development of a dog vaccine using a similar technology was announced in 2023.
An alternative project is being pursued by another organisation – biotech company Betuvax (part of the Artgen Biotech group), which is also developing a cat allergy vaccine. Under the project BTX‑301, a recombinant subunit vaccine is being created using bioinformatics and protein engineering. In 2025, the company reported that the drug was undergoing preclinical studies. The manufacturer then plans to submit a dossier for Health Ministry approval to conduct clinical trials in patients.
