Novartis’ SMA therapy Zolgensma (onasemnogene abeparvovec), the most expensive drug in the world, has been introduced into civil circulation in the Russian Federation.

“Zolgensma, registered in Russia in December 2021, has been officially put into civil circulation. A package of the drug will cost 133.1 million rubles,”  Orphannoie Radio, a telegram channel about rare genetic diseases, reported.

In the first six months of 2022, the expert council of the Circle of Kindness Foundation (a charity that supplies therapies for children with rare and severe diseases, including unregistered drugs) approved 58 applications for Zolgensma. In particular, 17 children were approved to have their therapy changed to Zolgensma, the Foundation reported.

The final results of phase 3 trials of Zolgensma have been published.

The FMBA previously announced its readiness to produce an analogue of Zolgensma, the most expensive medicine in the world.

Biocad has submitted an application to the Ministry of Health for clinical trials of a Russian SMA therapy.
