Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Cabinet to launch a “large-scale program to combat diabetes” in 2023. This is reported on the Kremlin website.

The head of state gave the order on Thursday, December 15, at a meeting of the Council for Strategic Development and National Projects.

According to the president, there are now over 5 million people in the Russian Federation diagnosed with the disease, but the actual number may be much higher. According to the latest estimates, the program requires funding of almost 240 bn rubles, while the budget for 2023 provides for 10 bn rubles.

Putin expressed the opinion that the program to combat diabetes should become as large-scale as the programs against cancer or cardiovascular diseases. According to the head of state, it should include “early diagnosis of the disease, guaranteed provision of citizens with medical products, including consumables and medicines, and, of course, preventive measures.”

A state program to combat diabetes has been under consideration by the Russian authorities since 2020. Representatives of specialized associations believe that the 10 bn rubles budgeted for these purposes may not be enough.

In April, following a meeting with members of the all-Russian public organization Delovaya Rossiya, the President instructed the government to introduce additional measures for the timely diagnosis of diabetes, starting from 2022.
