The Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, has approved the allocation of 440 million rubles from the federal budget to bolster the progress of bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cell donation. According to the government website, these funds will be utilized to enhance the accessibility of cutting-edge medical care for patients.
In particular, the funding will affect the organization of work of laboratories subordinate to the FMBA of Russia. They gather blood from donors and then perform bone marrow typing on the samples. Such work is needed in order to subsequently quickly find a suitable donor for transplantation.
It is clarified that today laboratories have accumulated 40 thousand samples awaiting typing. After completing this procedure, they will be sent to the Federal Bone Marrow Donor Registry, which operates from September 1, 2022. According to experts, the minimum size of the register required to cover the demand in the Russian Federation should contain at least 500 thousand samples. Thus, 90% of Russian patients in need of transplantation will be provided with donor material.
